The Journey That Shaped the Work

The work I do today did not come from a single idea, launch, or business plan. It was shaped over years of building, learning, creating, leading, starting over, and paying attention to what God kept revealing through the process.

There is a tendency to tell the story of our work as though everything happened in a straight line. We clean up the timeline, connect the dots, and make the journey sound more intentional than it actually felt while we were living it.

My journey has never looked like that.

The work I do today was shaped over time through business, media, leadership, mistakes, pivots, conversations, seasons of clarity, and seasons when I had no idea what God was doing. Looking back, I can see connections that were almost impossible to recognize while I was standing in the middle of them.

For years, I thought I was building businesses. In many ways, I was. What I did not fully understand was how much the process was building me.

That realization eventually became central to everything I teach.

The Work Started Long Before It Had a Name

I have always been drawn to ideas, people, business, and the process of building something from nothing. Entrepreneurship gave me a place to put all of those things together. It also gave me a front-row seat to the realities that come with carrying responsibility.

There is a version of entrepreneurship that looks exciting from the outside. You get to create your own opportunities, choose what you want to build, and imagine how far an idea can go. There is another side that reveals itself after you have been in the work for a while.

You begin dealing with uncertainty, cash flow, leadership, relationships, decisions, expectations, and the constant responsibility of figuring out what comes next.

Those experiences changed the way I thought about growth.

I began to see that business knowledge alone could only take me so far. I could learn better strategies, improve my execution, and develop stronger systems, yet the person carrying all of that responsibility still mattered.

My discipline mattered. My confidence mattered. My ability to focus mattered. My relationship with fear mattered. My willingness to make decisions mattered. My spiritual life mattered.

The deeper I went into entrepreneurship, the more personal business became.

That idea would eventually become part of what I now describe as self-mastery.

Media Became a Place to Think Out Loud

Podcasting became another important part of the journey.

Over the years, sitting behind a microphone gave me the opportunity to have hundreds of conversations about business, leadership, entrepreneurship, faith, and personal growth. Those conversations became an education of their own.

There is something powerful about listening to people explain how they think about their work. You begin noticing patterns. You hear how people make decisions, how they respond to adversity, how they define success, and what they have learned through experience.

Hosting those conversations also forced me to think more clearly about my own beliefs.

You cannot ask thoughtful questions for years without eventually turning some of those questions back on yourself.

What do I believe about success?

What does meaningful growth actually look like?

How much is enough?

What am I building?

Why am I building it?

What kind of person do I want to become while I am doing the work?

Those questions became increasingly important as my own journey continued to evolve.

Podcasting started as a form of media. Over time, it became one of the places where my thinking was refined.

It helped me understand that my work was never going to fit neatly inside one category.

Flame Starter Put Language Around Something I Had Been Living

Writing Flame Starter became another turning point.

The idea of the flame gave me language for something I had experienced throughout my own journey: the importance of understanding what is happening inside of you while you are building what is in front of you.

Every person carries something.

There are gifts, convictions, ideas, experiences, strengths, and desires that shape how we move through the world. There are also fears, habits, insecurities, and blind spots that influence how we respond when things become difficult.

The flame represents that inner work.

It represents passion, refinement, purpose, and the process of becoming more aware of who you are and what you are carrying.

That became a major part of my thinking because I had seen how easily people could become consumed by the external parts of success. We learn how to build the brand, grow the revenue, attract the customer, increase visibility, and create opportunity. We can become incredibly skilled at building something outside of ourselves while paying very little attention to what is happening within us.

My own experiences kept pushing me back toward that internal work.

It eventually became impossible for me to separate personal growth from business growth.

The two were connected.

Faith Changed the Question

My faith added another layer to all of this.

There comes a point where asking whether something can grow is no longer enough. You begin asking whether it should grow, how it should grow, and what faithfulness looks like while you are building it.

Those questions changed the way I began thinking about entrepreneurship.

I started looking at business through the lens of stewardship.

The ideas in my head, the relationships around me, the opportunities in front of me, the resources moving through my hands, and the influence I had been given all carried responsibility.

That perspective eventually shaped one of the convictions at the center of my work today: Business IS Ministry™.

Business gives us countless opportunities to serve people, create value, solve problems, develop others, generate resources, and influence the world around us. It also gives us countless opportunities to practice integrity, discipline, wisdom, courage, humility, and obedience.

Faith becomes very practical in that environment.

It becomes part of how we make decisions, how we treat people, how we manage resources, how we respond under pressure, and how we define growth.

That is where the idea of growing God's way became increasingly important to me.

I wanted to understand what it looked like to build something meaningful while staying aligned with the person God was calling me to become.

Some Seasons Taught Me Through Loss

Every journey has seasons that make sense later than they do in the moment.

There have been things I built that eventually needed to change. There have been directions I believed in that reached the end of their usefulness. There have been opportunities that looked right at one point and became distractions later.

Those seasons taught me something important about identity.

We can become deeply attached to what we build. The company, the title, the offer, the platform, or the idea can start becoming part of the way we define ourselves.

That attachment makes change difficult.

It can keep us carrying things long after the season has shifted.

One of the lessons I have had to learn repeatedly is that stewardship includes knowing when to release something.

Sometimes growth requires expansion. Other times it requires pruning.

Both demand trust.

The challenge is staying close enough to God, honest enough with yourself, and clear enough about the assignment to recognize which season you are actually in.

That kind of clarity rarely comes from strategy alone.

It comes from reflection, prayer, experience, counsel, and the willingness to tell yourself the truth.

Daily Crown Became the Place Where the Pieces Came Together

Eventually, the ideas that had been developing across years of entrepreneurship, podcasting, personal growth, writing, faith, and leadership began coming together.

That is what Daily Crown represents for me.

It brings together the things I have learned about faith, focus, fellowship, stewardship, spiritual formation, and the practical realities of building a business.

The crown represents authority and responsibility. It reminds me that leadership carries weight. What we have been entrusted with matters, and how we carry it matters too.

The flame represents what has been formed inside us.

Those two ideas belong together.

Who you are shapes how you carry what has been placed in your hands.

That is why the work today is centered around helping Christian founders grow their businesses God's way without drifting from their calling.

It is a simple sentence, but there are years of experience underneath it.

I understand how easy it is to drift.

Drift can happen when the business grows faster than the person carrying it. It can happen when money becomes too important. It can happen when opportunity starts driving the calendar. It can happen when comparison changes the strategy or when the pressure to succeed becomes louder than the original reason you started.

Staying aligned requires intention.

That is the work.

The Journey Is Still Shaping the Work

I do not see any of this as a finished story.

The work continues to evolve because I continue to evolve.

There are still lessons to learn, decisions to make, ideas to test, things to release, and areas where I need to grow. That is part of entrepreneurship, and I have become more comfortable with that reality over time.

I no longer expect the journey to move in a perfectly straight line.

I pay more attention to what each season is teaching me.

Some seasons teach through momentum. Others teach through resistance. Some give you clarity. Others force you to sit with questions long enough for something deeper to form.

All of it can shape the work.

When I look back, I can see how entrepreneurship taught me about responsibility, how podcasting sharpened my thinking, how writing helped me put language around self-mastery, and how faith changed the way I understand growth.

Those threads eventually became the work I am doing today.

And perhaps that is one of the most important things I have learned along the way.

The work we are called to do is often being shaped long before we understand what to call it.

Our responsibility is to keep paying attention, keep growing, keep listening, keep stewarding what is in our hands, and trust that God can use the entire journey to prepare us for the work ahead.

Self-Mastery: Becoming the Leader Who Can Carry the Growth

We spend a lot of time learning how to grow the business, but eventually the business starts revealing the person carrying it. Self-mastery is the ongoing work of developing the awareness, discipline, character, and spiritual maturity required to faithfully steward greater responsibility.

Most entrepreneurs begin by trying to master the business. We learn sales, marketing, strategy, leadership, finance, systems, and all the other disciplines required to build something that works. There is always another skill to improve and another problem to solve, so it is easy to assume that the next level of growth will come from learning one more tactic.

Eventually, though, the business starts asking something deeper of us.

Pressure exposes our habits. Leadership reveals our insecurities. Money brings our relationship with security to the surface. Opportunity tests our focus. Growth stretches our capacity, and setbacks reveal how we respond when the plan does not work the way we expected.

Over time, I have become convinced that self-mastery sits underneath almost every meaningful kind of growth. Strategy matters, but the person executing the strategy matters too. Opportunities matter, but our ability to recognize, choose, and steward the right opportunities matters just as much. The work we do on ourselves eventually shows up in the work we produce.

That is where self-mastery begins.

The Business Has a Way of Introducing You to Yourself

Entrepreneurship is an incredible mirror. It has a way of bringing things to the surface that we might otherwise avoid. A difficult client can expose our need for approval. A slow season can reveal how much of our identity has become attached to revenue. A growing team can uncover gaps in our communication or leadership. A new opportunity can show us how easily we become distracted.

One of the biggest mistakes we can make is blaming every problem on the market, the customer, the algorithm, the employee, or the strategy. Sometimes the thing standing in the way of growth is much closer to home. A lack of discipline, indecision, unfinished work, avoided conversations, or a constant chase for the next idea can quietly become barriers to progress.

That is why self-mastery requires honesty. We have to be willing to examine our patterns and recognize where we may be contributing to the very problems we are trying to solve. That kind of self-awareness takes humility, but it also gives us something valuable: the ability to work on what is actually within our control.

The business becomes healthier when the person leading it becomes healthier in the way they think, decide, communicate, and respond.

Awareness Gives You Something to Work With

Growth becomes much harder when we are unaware of our own patterns. We can repeat the same behavior for years while convincing ourselves that the problem is always somewhere else.

Self-awareness creates space.

You begin to recognize what happens inside you when a client says no, when revenue drops, when somebody else appears to be growing faster, or when an exciting new idea enters the room. You start noticing the situations that trigger fear, impatience, comparison, frustration, or the need to prove something.

That awareness changes the way you respond.

James 1:19 tells us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. There is a lot of maturity contained in that instruction. It requires enough awareness to recognize what is happening internally and enough self-control to keep that reaction from immediately becoming a decision.

Every emotion does not need an action attached to it.

Every thought does not deserve your agreement.

Every opportunity does not require a response.

The more clearly you understand yourself, the more intentionally you can lead yourself.

That matters because leadership begins long before somebody else starts following you.

Discipline Gives Your Calling Structure

Proverbs 25:28 compares a person without self-control to a city with broken-down walls. In the ancient world, those walls created protection and boundaries. They helped determine what belonged inside and what needed to stay outside.

Our lives need boundaries too.

Without discipline, everything gets access to us. Every notification can interrupt our attention. Every idea can become another project. Every request can end up on our calendar. Every opportunity can pull us in another direction. Eventually, the work that matters most gets whatever time and energy remain.

That is why I see discipline as part of stewardship.

Discipline helps us protect what God has placed in our hands. It gives structure to our priorities and helps us follow through on the commitments we have already made. It creates room for focused work, healthy relationships, rest, prayer, preparation, and the other things required to carry responsibility well.

Most discipline is remarkably ordinary. It looks like keeping the calendar, finishing the work, honoring a boundary, preparing for the meeting, getting enough rest, reviewing the numbers, and returning to the priorities you already decided were important.

Those small decisions rarely feel dramatic in the moment. Over time, they shape the person you become.

Focus Is a Form of Self-Mastery

Entrepreneurs tend to see possibilities everywhere. That ability can be incredibly valuable because we often notice opportunities that other people overlook. The challenge comes when possibility begins to compete with priority.

Every opportunity requires something from us. It may require time, attention, money, emotional energy, or capacity from the people around us. Saying yes to something always has a cost, even when the opportunity itself is good.

This is where focus becomes an important part of self-mastery.

I have had to learn that every good idea does not belong in my hands right now. Every invitation does not belong on my calendar, and every opportunity is not connected to the assignment God has given me for this season.

Distraction rarely introduces itself by saying, “I am here to distract you.” It usually arrives looking exciting, profitable, interesting, or important.

That is why clarity matters.

When you know what you are building, who you are serving, and what season you are in, you become much better at deciding what deserves your attention. You also become more comfortable allowing good opportunities to pass without feeling like you missed something.

This is one of the reasons Faith, Focus, and Fellowship sit at the center of Daily Crown. Faith keeps us rooted in God. Focus helps us steward the assignment in front of us. Fellowship gives us people who can help us see clearly when our own ambition or excitement starts pulling us in too many directions.

The Inner Life Eventually Shows Up in the Business

Some of the most expensive business decisions have very little to do with strategy. They come from fear, insecurity, ego, impatience, or the need for approval.

A business owner who is afraid of rejection may consistently underprice their work. Someone who avoids conflict may allow a team problem to grow for months. A leader who needs to be seen as the smartest person in the room may struggle to receive good advice. Someone driven by comparison may change direction every time they see another entrepreneur succeeding.

These patterns eventually become business problems because our inner life follows us into the company. That is one of the reasons spiritual formation matters so much to me. God is shaping the person carrying the assignment.

The patience you are developing matters. The humility you are learning matters. The courage required to have the hard conversation matters. The discipline required to stay focused matters. The wisdom required to know when to move and when to wait matters.

Galatians 5 includes self-control among the fruit of the Spirit. That tells me self-mastery has a deeply spiritual dimension. We are learning how to govern ourselves under the direction of God so that our emotions, appetites, ambitions, and fears do not run the show.

As responsibility increases, that internal work becomes even more important. More people may depend on your decisions. More resources may move through your hands. Your influence may increase. Your margin for careless reactions gets smaller.

Growth requires capacity, and some of that capacity is built internally.

Your Identity Needs a Stronger Foundation Than the Scoreboard

Business gives us numbers for almost everything. Revenue, profit, subscribers, clients, followers, downloads, conversions, engagement, and dozens of other metrics help us understand what is happening.

Those numbers can be useful.

They can also become dangerous when we use them to measure ourselves.

A strong month can make us feel like we finally proved something. A difficult month can make us question whether we have what it takes. Someone else's growth can suddenly feel like evidence that we are falling behind. That is exhausting because the scoreboard is always moving.

Self-mastery requires an identity strong enough to survive the fluctuations of business. We have to know who we are before the marketplace gives us its opinion.

Psalm 139 reminds us that God knows us completely. That truth becomes especially important in environments where performance is constantly being measured.

The business will have good seasons and difficult ones. Some ideas will work and some will fail. Certain opportunities will open while others disappear. None of those moments get to define your worth. A secure identity creates better decisions because you no longer need every decision to prove something about you.

Self-Mastery Is the Work Beneath the Work

There will always be another tactic to learn, another platform to understand, another tool to try, or another strategy someone says you should be using.

Those things have value.

I have simply learned that some of the most important work happens underneath all of them.

It is the work of knowing your patterns, protecting your focus, managing your emotions, strengthening your discipline, understanding your motivations, creating healthy boundaries, listening to God, and following through on what He has already placed in your hands.

That work never really ends.

Each season reveals another layer. Greater responsibility exposes new areas that need attention. Growth gives us fresh opportunities to practice patience, wisdom, courage, humility, and self-control.

That is why I think about self-mastery as a journey rather than a destination.

The goal is becoming someone who can faithfully carry more responsibility, influence, opportunity, and resources without losing the things that mattered before the growth arrived.

We spend a lot of time asking how far the business can go.

There is another question worth asking: Who am I becoming as I carry it there?

That question sits at the heart of self-mastery. And in many ways, it is the work that makes all the other work possible.

Business IS Ministry™: How You Build Matters to God

Faith should shape more than what we say about business. It should shape the way we build, lead, serve, steward, and grow. Business IS Ministry™ is about bringing faith into the real decisions that define the work.

For years, many of us have been taught to separate faith from business.

Church happens over here. Business happens over there. Prayer belongs in one part of life, while strategy, revenue, customers, leadership, and growth belong somewhere else.

I don’t believe God intended us to live that way.

When your faith shapes who you are, it naturally shapes how you build. It shows up in the decisions you make, the people you choose to work with, the way you handle money, how you respond under pressure, and the opportunities you decide to pursue.

That’s what I mean when I say Business IS Ministry™.

Business is one of the places where our faith gets lived out in real time.

Faith Has to Be the Foundation

One of the core convictions behind Daily Crown is simple: faith is the foundation, and business grows from there.

It is easy to build a plan, set goals, choose a strategy, decide what success should look like, and then ask God to bless the direction we have already chosen. I’ve been there. Most entrepreneurs have.

Kingdom-first business starts deeper.

It makes us ask what God has actually placed in our hands, who we are called to serve, what season we are in, and what faithfulness looks like right now.

Those questions challenge our motives. They expose comparison. They reveal the places where ego, fear, ambition, or impatience may be driving the business more than we realize.

They also bring clarity.

Your business is something you have been entrusted to steward. Your ideas, abilities, relationships, influence, resources, opportunities, and even the problems you are uniquely equipped to solve are all part of that stewardship.

Psalm 24:1 reminds us that “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”

That changes the question from simply, “How big can I grow this?” to “How well am I carrying what God has placed in my hands?”

Growth still matters. Revenue matters. Profit matters. Execution matters. Excellence matters.

Stewardship requires us to take all of those things seriously.

It also requires us to pay attention to what growth is doing to us along the way.

Profit Has a Purpose

Christian entrepreneurs can sometimes get uncomfortable talking about money.

I don’t think we need to.

A healthy business needs revenue. It needs margin. It needs resources. Profit gives us the ability to invest, hire, serve, give, create, expand, and keep doing the work.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to build a profitable business.

Money simply has to stay in its proper place.

Business gets complicated when money starts making the decisions.

A large opportunity can pull you outside your calling. A good-paying client can keep you in an unhealthy relationship. A popular strategy can pressure you to communicate in ways that don’t align with your values.

Those are spiritual moments just as much as they are business moments.

Faith becomes very practical when there is money on the table.

The way we sell matters. The way we price matters. The way we negotiate matters. The way we pay people matters. The way we respond when revenue is tight matters.

How we build says something about who we are becoming.

Your Work Serves People

Ministry, at its core, is service.

Business gives us opportunities to serve people every single day.

A business solves problems. It creates value. It creates jobs. It helps people move forward. It provides resources, experiences, ideas, products, and solutions that can make someone’s life or work better.

The plumber who restores water to a family’s home is serving. The accountant who gives a business owner financial clarity is serving. The consultant who helps someone make a wise decision is serving. The designer who helps bring an idea to life is serving.

Good work matters.

People experience your faith through your character long before they hear you talk about it. They experience it through your honesty, preparation, generosity, communication, reliability, patience, boundaries, leadership, and integrity. They experience it in the way you handle mistakes and the way you respond when things don’t go your way. Sometimes keeping your word is the witness. Sometimes delivering excellent work is the ministry. Sometimes treating someone with dignity in a difficult situation says more than a paragraph of religious language ever could.

Excellence Is Part of Stewardship

Colossians 3:23 tells us to work as though we are working for the Lord. That should raise the standard. Being faith-driven does not excuse sloppy execution. Stewardship should make us care more about getting better at what we do.

Learn your craft. Understand your numbers. Improve your processes. Communicate clearly. Prepare. Follow through. Fix what is broken. Become a better leader. Excellence does not mean perfection. It means we take the assignment seriously.

The people we serve deserve our best effort, and growth often requires us to become more capable than we were when we started.

The Business Is Growing You Too

One of the things entrepreneurship has taught me is that business has a way of introducing you to yourself.

Pressure reveals things.

Fear shows up. Control shows up. Impatience shows up. Pride shows up. Comparison shows up. Insecurity shows up. The need to be seen or validated can show up in places we didn’t expect. That’s one reason spiritual formation is such an important part of the Daily Crown philosophy.

We are becoming stronger stewards.

The business will eventually expose the areas where we need to grow. Those areas show up in our leadership, relationships, decision-making, money habits, pace, and culture. God can use the very thing you are building to shape the person carrying it. Pay attention to that. You may be asking God to increase the business while He is increasing your capacity to carry it.

Obedience Has Feet

Faith-driven entrepreneurship still requires action. We pray. We listen. We seek wisdom. We get counsel. We study the numbers. We make the plan. And then we move. Send the proposal. Make the call. Raise the price. Hire the person. End the relationship. Start the project. Shut something down. Wait when you need to wait. Move when it is time to move. Obedience has feet.

There are times when we keep praying about something because acting on what we already know requires courage.

Faith eventually has to become movement.

That is where business can become one of the clearest expressions of our trust in God.

We make wise decisions, take responsibility, and stay open to His direction as we build.

Grow the Way You Were Meant to Grow

You don’t have to build your business exactly like somebody else built theirs. Your assignment has a shape. Your season has a pace. Your stewardship has boundaries.

The goal is to become clear enough to recognize what God is doing in your own hands and faithful enough to follow His direction.

Build with wisdom. Pursue profit. Serve people well. Grow your capacity. Develop your craft. Create value. Lead with integrity. Take the opportunities that align. Walk away from the ones that don’t.

And through all of it, stay close enough to God to recognize when growth starts pulling you away from the thing He originally called you to build.

That is what we mean at Daily Crown when we talk about growing your business God’s way without drifting from your calling.

Business is one of the places where faith becomes visible.

It shows up in conversations, contracts, customers, employees, partnerships, problems, opportunities, and ordinary Monday mornings.

It shows up in the way you carry what God placed in your hands. Faith is the foundation. Business grows from there.
